This is a great kit for people who are serious about learning to engrave knives. Starting with a solidly built Case knife, we apply a beautiful scroll design by Tira Mitchell. We apply the pattern using a proprietary method that is both durable and easy to remove once you are done engraving. This makes it easy to customize an engraving or correct for mistakes without leaving markings on the knife that would be hard to remove when you are done engraving.
Along with the knife, you get the graver you need to engrave. For use with an EnSet or any other power assisted engraving system, this square graver blank is made specifically to cut stainless steel. It will not fracture like a carbide, nor will it dull as fast as a typical high speed steel graver.
To shape and sharpen the graver, we include instructions and an Engraver.com Graver Tip model. The resin model makes it easy to see what your graver tip should look like after you shape and sharpen it.
Before you cut your knife, we also include a mild steel practice plate with the same pattern applied as the knife. This plate will give you a chance to test your graver and warm up your skills before cutting the knife. The practice plate’s steel is a little softer than the stainless steel sides of the knife, but it is still a great way to work out kinks before cutting your knife.
Finally, we also provide an unblackened Study Casting of an engraved practice plate with Tira’s design. The plate shows how Tira shaded her design and can be used as a pattern guide if the pattern on the knife gets obscured while you work on it.
Beyond this kit, engravers will need an EnSet or other power assisted engraving system, a means of holding the knife like a ball vise, and/or fixtures to hold/protect the knife while engraving, and a shaping/sharpening system to sharpen your graver.
